Participation is the essence of Community Radio
The essence of Community Radio is participation of the community in managing the station, deciding on programming and producing content.
Through this participation Community Radio stations are embedded and rooted in a community and provide programmes that have strong local relevancy for its audience, the community. The stations provide information about the direct surroundings and discuss subjects that are not covered on national stations, as they have no commercial values or nation wide relevance.
Community Radio gives a voice to the community they serve with programmes in local languages, respecting local culture, traditions and interests. And it facilitates dialogue within the community; while on a national level it encourages diversity, creativity and citizens participation in democratic processes.
