General information
Community radio is a relatively new phenomenon in Sierra Leone. Most of the radio stations started in 2002 at the end of the 11-year civil war. Despite their short history, community radio has already played a crucial role in providing information and raising awareness for the population of Sierra Leone.
Informotrac Sierre Leone was launched in 2003 as RNTC programme but became autonomous in 2006 and is now an independent NGO. Today, Informotrac SL works with 11 community radio stations (eight existing and three new). All these stations have received studio, reporting and transmitting equipment from the RNTC programme.
Community radio is a medium that gives people a voice. Radio stations play an important role in reconciliation and conflict prevention in this war-affected country.

Track record
Besides its partnership with RNTC, Informotrac Sierra Leone has developed several partnerships with other development and human rights organisations such as:

  • Forum of Conscience – radio programmes on the Truth & Reconciliation report
  • ENCISS – production of radio programmes on peace building and good governance
  • Informotrac has submitted two project proposals in the field of training: Voice for Africa (election reporting) and UNICEF ( training of community broadcasters on children’s rights).

A relationship with The Mano River Women’s Peace Network (MARWOPNET) for the establishment of three women-centred community radio stations in the three Mano River Union states (Guinea-Liberia and Sierra Leone) is also being developed.
